But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine. Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance. Titus 2:1-2

Rolling Stones, lead singer Mick Jagger lamented “what a drag it is getting old!” Maybe? But one thing that can accompany getting older is spiritual maturity. While its not guaranteed (there are a lot of babies in the faith of all ages), the apostle Paul shows us what it looks like. We can be temperate and free from excess use of alcohol,… maybe even abstaining. We should be of such Christlike character that other venerate or honor us- that’s dignified. A vibrant faith that is accompanied by a sound mind should mark or life. And of course, love should permeate all as we endure whatever comes. Old guys rule!

How about me? Which of these qualities is lacking and in serious need of development? Where has God done His best work. Why is my granddaughter so fond of me?

God, as this day begins- I thank you for the blessings of growing older. May I be like the person Paul described to Titus.

A resolution of Jonathan Edwards, #24. Resolved, whenever I do any conspicuously evil action, to trace it back, till I come to the original cause; and then both carefully endeavor to do so no more, and to fight and pray with all my might against the original of it.
