But Esau said, “I have plenty, my brother; let what you have be your own.” Jacob said, “No, please, if now I have found favor in your sight, then take my present from my hand, for I see your face as one sees the face of God, and you have received me favorably. Please take my gift which has been brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me and because I have plenty.” Thus he urged him and he took it. Genesis 33:9-11
Jacob was afraid that his brother Esau would still be angry and would attack him. So, he sent gifts of livestock ahead. In the end, Esau accepted them. When it was time to go their way, Jacob went on to Succoth, not where Esau went. Jacob was responding to fear, but may have actually done something very wise. He eased the pain of Esau in a practical way. You could call it a bribe, but it seemed to appease him. Now, the two brothers were reconciled. We are reconciled with God by the ‘appeasement’ brought about by Jesus death on the cross. His blood atoned for our sin.
Am I reconciled with God? Yes, because I have in faith put my trust in Jesus’ death on the cross. Am I reconciled to everyone else? Yes, insomuch as it is possible with me, I am at peace with all men.
God, as I start this day in Del Rio / Acuna, move me into situations where I can love others in Your name. Use whatever giftedness I possess to bless the men on this mission trip. I am excited and in my element.
