Why I Read The Bible

But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude; for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer.

Some may wonder ‘Why I Read The Bible’? They may think, ‘Isn’t that old fashioned?’ ‘Isn’t the Bible just a bunch of fairy tales?’ Well- Yes, and No! Reading the Bible daily is a very old practice and consistent with many great men and women of yesteryear, but it certainly is not a bunch of fairy tales. I believe the Bible is the enduring written collection of God’s communication to man, containing as the centerpiece, the accounts of His Son, Jesus Christ, who came into the world He made. It contains the plan of salvation by which any man can be forgiven, be reconciled to God, receive the hope of heaven and begin a relationship with the God of the universe. That’s why I read the Bible!

The apostle Paul warned Timothy that there are many false teachings and philosophies which deceive people and lead lead them into practices that are harmful and bring them into bondage to so-called rules of life that are not required by God. As I survey the landscape today, I see so many- don’t you? Our major universities which once were formed for the purpose of knowing God, Jesus Christ, and the Bible are now bastions of deceit, political correctness gone wild, so-called social justice and study of anything, it seems, except truth. Its sad, really. The main stream media outlets, likewise are partisan mouthpieces no longer anchored in fact, but rather 24-7 commentary from a liberal viewpoint.

And so, I read the timeless Word of God, the Bible. I challenge you to do the same, even just a chapter a day, for ten minutes a day, for one month. As you have questions, (and you will), I offer my email and my time to answer all to the best of my ability from over 39 years of this practice.

My prayer today is: God, as this day begins for me, I wonder if You will impart to me the love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness so necessary in our world? Will you find me faithful to share it with others? And thank you that long ago You created a hunger in me to live by Your Word- the Bible!
