Who Is Worthy?

And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the book and to break its seals?”  And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the book or to look into it.  Then I began to weep greatly because no one was found worthy to open the book or to look into it; and one of the elders said to me, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals.” Revelation 5:2-5 NASB

You and I cannot give away what we do not possess. There is a similar legal sentiment and rule expressed in Latin: Nemo dat quod non habet, literally meaning “no one gives what they don’t have”. So what is this “book” that only Jesus is worthy to open? Where did it come from? Who is the rightful owner?

Well, here is my theory. The book is the Title Deed to the earth. The rightful owner was God, who conveyed the deed to Adam (and mankind). Adam forfeited the deed by the fraud of Satan. Satan took possession of the earth. In equity, Jesus is now the only one who can reclaim it, as the Son of God (rightful heir). You and I cannot reclaim it, unless we become adopted into the family of God and become a co-heir with Christ.

So, Jesus takes the deed and will now inherit the earth. He will claim it both legally and forcefully possess it. The implication for us is that God is ushering in His eternal kingdom in a physical manifestation in the future. We are part of the spiritual kingdom on earth. But, one day it will be redeemed and remade into paradise. Wow! Can you imagine?

Am I prepared for the new kingdom? How and when did I receive adoption into God’s family?

God, as this Mother’s Day begins- May my wife and all the moms around me feel blessed and appreciated. Thank you God that You will one day make all things as they should be. Meanwhile, may I live in such a way as to reclaim my little part of the world for Your possession… beginning with my heart.
