When Tempted

Now Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around  by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He was hungry.  And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”  And Jesus answered him, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’” Luke 4:1-4 NASB

When I am tired, hungry or angry, I am at my worst and most susceptible to temptation and sin. When I am down and defeated, its then that the enemy of my soul has an advantage. However, the promises of God, contained in the Word of God are my safeguard. When Jesus was tempted three times in the wilderness, He was in a weakened state. His answers and success were found in the words “It is written…”. He claimed truths about God and promises from God. We can do the same and find victory too. Of course, this assumes we know the Word of God.

How much effort have I given to know the promises of God? Do I worship God in spirit and in truth?

God, as this day begins- May I walk in Your ways, holy and blameless as I seek to fulfill Your will. Protect me by Your Word and abiding Presence from sin and detours that take me off the path You’ve laid for me. Let’s begin our thanksgiving celebration a day early.
