I am still discovering more and more about God’s will and His ways (even after 45 years as a Christian). As life unfolds day after day I am reminded that His thoughts are not my thoughts and the wisdom of God exceeds mine… “as high as the heavens above”. The difficult thing is to adjust my thinking and my will to His revealed Word and how He is working in any given situation.
The prophet Habakkuk faced a moment where God was about to do something that seemed so ‘out of character’ for God. God was going to judge His own people (the Israelites) by allowing a wicked enemy to conquer them. What?! How could this be? God’s ways baffled Habakkuk. One of the profound messages underlying His actions is God’s holy nature. He isn’t content that we are ‘just a little better than the wicked people around us’. We are to be set apart. Here, the Israelites were being judged because of their greed, exploitation, violence, debauchery, and idolatry. Sounds like a warning to us in our day as well.
Look among the nations! Watch!
Be horrified! Be frightened speechless!
For I am accomplishing a work in your days—
You would not believe it even if you were told! Habakkuk 1:5 NASB
God, as this day begins- I am going to focus less on the apparent inequities that occur and the difficulties that surround, and instead determine to look inward and allow You to produce holiness. May I avoid the temptations of greed, using others for self-gain, any violence, sexual sin or idolatry. That way I can be useful in Your kingdom today.
