I live on “Church Row”. On Ontario Ave. in my hometown there has to be no less than 10 churches. Maybe the zoning commission thought that was a good idea, I don’t know. But, its almost like you can drive and shop for your favorite church. When churches compete (with each other) they cease to be spiritual. That was what A. W. Tozer said as he tried to emphasize that when we as pastors lose our divine focus and operate solely on natural human ambition, we are at risk of the same ‘competition’ that the apostle Paul experienced with the immature believers in Corinth. Instead, when churches are in harmony and applaud one another, a greater work for God can be accomplished. It would be far better to measure or compare ourselves with ourselves and against the standard God has given us.
For we do not presume to rank or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves; but when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they have no understanding; But the one who boasts is to boast in the Lord. For it is not the one who commends himself that is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends. 2 Corinthians 10:12, 17-18 NASB
How appreciative am I of the work God does in others? Do I applaud them or am I trying to compete with them?
God, as this day begins- at the Colson Fellows conference on Christian World View, I expect to hear many wonderful works of God. May I learn from them. May I applaud all You are doing in this world and admire the minds of great Christians assembled together.
