What Does Ichabod Mean For Us?

ichabodNow his daughter-in-law, Phinehas’s wife, was pregnant and about to give birth; and when she heard the news that the ark of God was taken and that her father-in-law and her husband had died, she kneeled down and gave birth, for her pains came upon her. And about the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her, “Do not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son.”
But she did not answer or pay attention. And she called the boy Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel,” because the ark of God was taken and because of her father-in-law and her husband. She said, “The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God was taken.” 1 Samuel 4:19-22

The presence of God brings blessing, security and love for people who have invited Him to be their king, master and Lord. The same is true for nations. Eli and his two sons died as a result of the Philistine war and moreover the judgment of God upon them. They were disobedient and defiant of God’s ways and unwilling to fulfill their priestly duties. In a prophetic way the state of Israel is defined by the naming of the boy Ichabod. God’s glory and presence had departed. They found themselves defeated and nearly destroyed. What they needed was to return to God. The same is true for us today, when feeling defeated we simply need to repent and return to the God who loves us.

How is my obedience? Is the way I live my life attractive to my children? Do I see and sense the blessings, love and protection of God?

Lord Jesus, to say that is my affirmation that You are my Master, Savior and Lord. Please be very real and present with me today. As I look ahead at what is planned, I need You to give me the words, affection and insight to speak to people. I want Your favor upon me and my life. Thank you for my wonderful family and Your answers to prayers.
