Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever. 1 John 2:15-17
The beloved disciple John, reminds us that our affections should not be misplaced on the values of the world… the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the boastful pride of life. These are temporary temptations that will not last, nor satisfy. We are to pursue instead the will of God. As we do, we experience eternal life. What is the motivation for making this choice?… Its the abiding love of God the Father that is now within us.
Are the lusts of the world affecting my life and getting any of my attention or affection? Is pride creeping into my heart? Am I doing the will of God?
God, thank you that Your calling is to eternal life and things that really matter. Please continue to help me focus on that which matters and to reject the things of the world. I praise You that knowing You really is eternal life.
