The Search For Good Leaders

The righteous is concerned for the rights of the poor,
The wicked does not understand such concern.
Scorners set a city aflame,
But wise men turn away anger.
When a wise man has a controversy with a foolish man,
The foolish man either rages or laughs, and there is no rest.
Men of bloodshed hate the blameless,
But the upright are concerned for his life.
A fool always loses his temper. Proverbs 29:7-11

Strong leaders are not hard to find, good ones are! By good, I mean those who are humble and not self-seeking and who govern with wisdom and righteousness. I was thinking this morning about how good movements go astray (often after their iconic and godly leader is gone). The Civil Rights movement has largely become a grievance industry that holds companies hostage for “reparations”. The leaders of the 60’s have found their way into civic governance leading with so-called progressive ideals that have produced a disaster in education, commerce, and have decimated the hope of people in inner-cities.

The Church leaders and pastors in America continue to struggle with remaining relevant, they use modern marketing, promote materialism, selfishness and self-sufficiency apart from God, while ignoring the preaching of the Bible and obedience to its commands. While she (the church) no longer must say “silver and gold, have I none”… she cannot any longer say “take up thy bed and walk”. Miracles have ceased and her voice in the marketplace of ideas is shunned for lack of power and integrity.

Business leaders are waking up to the triple bottom line, profits, employees, and the community around them. Businesses are carrying the load for healthcare costs, retirement, pensions, etc. And the savvy leader knows that the company can “give back” to causes like Veterans, homelessness solutions, the environmental protection and receive loyalty from consumers in return. We are facing a profound question that presents itself over and over throughout modern history- Why are all the best men and women going into business? (and not the church or civil service). The answer could be the direct connection between work and reward, effort and results, and the fellowship of like-minded world changers!

What kind of leader am I becoming? Where would God have me in the next season of life?

God, as this day begins- I thank you for the Bible (Your Holy Word), and the instruction from Solomon. Please help me be a humble person who is able to lead my own life, family, and ministries well. Thank you for those friendships that make the journey wonderful.
