Stumbling To Find The Right Words

If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well. Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well. Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires. So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. James 3:2-5

Sometimes I say things that even surprise me. I don’t mean those heavenly insights that reveal great truths of God. I mean the base things that reveal my heart still is subjected to corruption and darkness. Our words give us away. What we say, shows our heart. When God has truly done a redemptive work in our lives, our speech will reflect His love and grace. Such a little thing can reveal a magnitude of pride within. We need the control of the Holy Spirit more than ever as God does His work to wash us from the inside. Meanwhile, if we give attention to our words, we can avoid significant stumbling.

How quick am I to share my opinion? Is my speech reflecting godly values within or corruption? Does anyone really want to hear what I have to say?

God, as this day begins- I thank you for daily transforming me more and more into the person You desire. I know You are far from done! Would you use my words to edify and build up, not to tear down… to speak truth in a loving manner and to not stumble. Personally, I ask that You would touch the heart of the teenage girl I know who is struggling so hard with self-worth and vacillating emotions. Protect her, give her insight and penetrate her heart with Your assurance and presence. Do a miracle please.
