This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life. These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you. 1 John 2:25-26 NASB
So why would the beloved apostle John remind us of God’s promise of eternal life (one beyond this one) and to be concerned about deception?
Because, we have an enemy of our soul who seeks to deceive us, and many lost people doing the same! Before John gave us this encouragement and admonition… he wrote earlier in chapter 2 of his letter what I will summarize: We have an advocate, Jesus (who like a lawyer) pleads our sin case before God the Father. He says we are no longer guilty because He Himself is the propitiation (payment) for our sins.
John continues.. If we know Him (Jesus), we keep his commands (and they are not burdensome). If the love of God is being perfected in you, you will walk as He (Jesus) walked. This is nothing new; it’s the fulfillment of the life God promised: a True Light shining in you. What is the Evidence of the light – LOVE!… you love your brother and sister. So, accept the reality that your sins are forgiven
Don’t love the world or “the things” of the world, but rather allow the Holy Spirit in you to lead and guide you into all TRUTH. Why? There is a liar who denies that Jesus is the Savior and the unique only begotten Son of God. Don’t fall into the world again and deny Him by your words or actions! Because if what was in you from the beginning remains- You too will remain in the Son and the Father!
Now it all makes sense… when John says to us: This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life. These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you. Let meditate upon this truth today. God bless you.
