Religious Tire-Kicking

tire kickerNow Herod was very glad when he saw Jesus; for he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some sign performed by Him.
And he questioned Him at some length; but He answered him nothing.
And the chief priests and the scribes were standing there, accusing Him vehemently.
And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, dressed Him in a gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilate.
Now Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for before they had been enemies with each other. Luke 23:8-12

People are curious about Jesus. Herod Antipas was no different. People come to Jesus for their reasons. Herod wanted to see a miracle performed. I think he wanted to know if the stories were true. Jesus did not respond to this self-centered, faithless, tire-kicker. When Herod didn’t get what he wanted, suddenly treated Jesus with contempt and mocking. It is fascinating that the a bond between Herod and Pilate was formed that day. Neither knew what to do with Jesus.

What have I done with Jesus? Am I faithfully following Him or just ‘kicking the tires’?

God, I am so grateful that when I was curious about Jesus, He revealed Himself to me as the King of the Jews, the Christ, and my Lord. In spite of my small exercise of faith, He met me where I was. As this day begins, I pray that those in my circle of friendship who are physically ill and suffering would have relief and comfort and ultimate healing, especially Dottie. I pray for our pastoral team at church. Give us each a hunger for Your word, a love for Your people and insight in how to serve best in the ministries we find ourselves. Draw new people to worship this weekend as You gather and build up the saints already saved. And thank you for an amazing and fun week at the school. Wow!
