Pure Motives

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. James 3:14-18

Understanding why I do, what I do, is one of the greatest self-discoveries I can ever make. Its called introspection. If I am motivated by bitter jealousy and envy or selfish ambition and strife, and I justify it, I am operating from a very earthly, natural, even demonic place. To some degree I think we all have mixed emotions and motivations. But, coming from this improper motivation will only lead to chaos in our relationships, workplaces and households.

But, God’s wisdom produces in us, pure motives! He does what He does from purity. And when we do too, we can expect very good things. The beginning “seed” sown with proper and righteous motives is done so by one who has made peace with God and extends that peace to others.

As I consider the big endeavors of my life- that which gets my time, talent and treasure… have any impure, selfish ambitions derailed me from lving according to God’s wisdom?

God, as this day begins- I am aware of people hurting and struggling, some facing dire diagnosis from doctors. I pray that You will intervene with Mrs. Jones and heal her pancreatitis in a miraculous manner. Surprise her daughter and husband, even today, with a good report. Please show Your mercy and care. In general, I pray again that by Easter, Your power and might will be seen worldwide with a remedy for the Coronavirus. Continue to check my motivations and harmonize them to Yours.
