Pour Yourself Out

For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8

A drink offering was a part of a quart of wine that was poured out onto the fire by the priests along with the animal sacrifice. In part, it created a ‘sweet smelling aroma to the Lord’. It foreshadowed the pouring out of Jesus blood upon the ultimate altar (Calvary). Now, Paul describes his life and service to the Lord as the near consummation of his ministry approaches, as a ‘drink offering’. What beautiful imagery!

Each of us who have put our faith and trust in Jesus are priests in God’s kingdom. Our life and service are the sacrifice we give to God. And like Paul, a reward can be anticipated- even the crown of righteousness.

When my time of departure comes… can I say that I have run the course, fought the good fight of faith, and poured my life out as a drink offering?

God, as this day begins, my calendar is full. Every minute is spoken for. Yet, all seems to be according to Your will. If there is anything outside Your will, please direct me in the way I should go. I hope I earn a crown in this life, so I might have something to throw down before Your thrown.
