Making A Name For Myself

They said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”  The Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.  The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them.  Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”  So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city.  Genesis 11:4-8 NASB

There is a desire inside me to “make a name” for myself. That’s fine if its a result of following God’s plan for my life. Many go astray in pursuit of fame, ego, and self-gratification. It appears that after the flood, mankind wanted to collectively reach to heaven and make for ourselves a name and perhaps claim equality with God or even superiority. This happens a lot with today’s ‘utopia builders’! They want to re-make society in their own image and one which is devoid of God and His authority. That’s scary. God, in His grace confounded language and scattered people. He will do it again in this experiment called America.

How well do I understand the creature and creator relationship? Am I striving to ‘make a name’ for myself at the expense of God’s will for my life?

God, as this day begins- I have the opportunity to minister to people hurting because they’ve lost loved ones. Help me connect them to You, the source of help, comfort and healing. Open hearts to hear the message of Jesus and the hope of heaven. My parents gave me a name. My family and friends know it. You have a name for me too. Help me be content in that.
