But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”
And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus. Matthew 1:21-25
Arguably, the most profound miracle in the gospels, the virgin birth sets Jesus apart from anyone who has ever lived. In thinking about what happened, I find a great appreciation for Joseph’s compassion, integrity and obedience. He becomes part of the most amazing events in history. He doesn’t understand why his fiancee is pregnant, yet he purposes in his heart to do what is right without causing her harm. Then, God’s greater plan is revealed by an angel in a dream and he obeys, not just to marry her, but to accept the responsibility of caring for the Messiah, which would change everything… including fleeing to Egypt with his young family. Kudos to Joseph for recognizing God’s plan and obeying.
Am I recognizing God’s greater plan, when my plans get upset or changed? What miracle is God about, that I may be discounting by my response?
God, You really are able to orchestrate the events of history and super impose miracles when needed. Help me see what You are doing today. As I host the worship services today, would you help me with every word spoken. I hope I can explain and extend Your love and call to commitment in a way that honors You. May You be worshiped today as our heart’s express how wonderful You are.
