Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed. 1Timothy 6:17-19
Self-centered living and prosperity can be pitfalls in our spiritual development and they can drive a wedge between us and God. Why? Our focus can shift from pleasing the God who loves us to fixation on riches. We forget that God supplies all we need in this life. What’s the antidote? Generous living- being ready to share instead of hoarding everything for ourselves. This is where the true riches and life are found! Truly it is as the apostle Paul wrote: godliness with contentment is great gain.
What consumes my daily thoughts and efforts?… things of this world or thoughts of the next? How do I spend the money available to me?
God, as this day begins, help me focus upon what You have planned and to enjoy the wonderful things you’ve placed in my life. I want to be a content person. May I see the needs of others and reach out and meet those within my power. Thank you for the greater things in life: my family, friends, a home, and purpose each day.
