But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed (Luke 5:16)
But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed (Luke 5:16)
Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the people heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick. Matthew 14:13-14

In a horrific and vindictive act Herodias manipulated her husband into killing John the Baptist in a particularly gruesome manner. Jesus received the news of the death of the man he called ‘the greatest of those born among women’ and wanted a moment to himself. That’s understandable. John was the forerunner to Jesus’ ministry and his cousin. Amazingly, He can’t get that time to Himself because the crowds follow Him. What’s His reaction? He felt compassion for them and healed their sick. Now, I need a moment to myself to reflect on my selfish nature.

How do I process grief? Does it help me become more aware and compassionate?

God, I see again in Jesus all to which I aspire. As we move through this day, help me respond to people in a way that is compassionate and Christlike. Please go before me in power providing wisdom and resource within the ministries You’ve appointed me.
