Gamaliel’s Principle

gamalielBut a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law, respected by all the people, stood up in the Council and gave orders to put the men outside for a short time. And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you propose to do with these men… So in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or action is of men, it will be overthrown; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against God.” Acts 5:34-39

When the gospel was beginning to spread the religious leaders saw their influence waning. They were worried about Peter, John, and the other apostles of Jesus doing miracles and all the people following this new teaching. So they imprisoned them. Gamaliel, the wise Jewish teacher warned them that them might actually be fighting against God. What great advice. He basically said, ‘If God isn’t in this, it will amount to nothing, but, if He is, you can’t stop it’.

Are there any areas of my life or ministry where I need to apply Gamaliel’s principle? Is God at work in a way I don’t understand?

God, I always want to be on Your side of things. Give me the courage to stand, endure misunderstanding, ridicule and suffering when needed. I have convictions from Your Word. When its time, please let me speak for You in the public forum. As this day begins, please lead and guide me throughout the day… and when necessary, to rightly apply Gamaliel’s principle.
