First and Foremost

I think we have all heard the term “first and foremost”. We invoke it to recalibrate priorities. With all that happens in life and the world, every once in awhile its good to remind myself what is “first and foremost”. For me it is how my life fits within God’s overarching story. That story is best understood by remembering the Savior of the world died for my sins, was placed in a borrowed cave, took up His own life on the third day, and then appeared… not once, but over 40 days to over 500 people. This is the most established fact of the first century. Whatever is happening on any given day, I can remember that I am loved and that I have a profound purpose in the world (to reach out and love others in Jesus name) as I share this gospel (good news) with others. What is first and foremost for you?

For I handed down to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also. 1 Corinthians 15:3-8 NASB

In what ways do I need to adjust my priorities in light of what is “first and foremost”? Is there anything undone that needs my attention today?

God, as this day begins, I thank you for the message of the gospel and how every day (along with whatever troubles present), that I have You and Your affection, a profound purpose and the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. Please lead and guide me today so that I might make an eternal difference in someone’s life. And also, thank you for my beautiful bride who turns 16 years old today. Hmmm, did I get that backwards?
