Dissed (Why God Doesn’t Need My Money)

Here for this third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be a burden to you; for I do not seek what is yours, but you; for children are not responsible to save up for their parents, but parents for their children. 2 Corinthians 2:12:14

The apostle Paul was in several ways ‘discounted’ and not given the respect and affection he should have in the Corinthian church. He was ‘dissed’ (disrespected and put down). What was his response? To love them all the more. Here, he reminds them when it came to receiving financial support from them, he decided not to. Instead he worked and allowed nearby churches to support his ministry campaign. Paul rethinks that strategy, out loud, and says something very heartfelt… ‘for I do not seek what is yours, but you’. How beautiful is that?! Musical artist Keith Green wrote similar lyrics in his song To Obey Is Better Than Sacrifice, he starts with the words,
I don’t need your money
I want your life
And I hear you say that I’m coming back soon
But you act like I’ll never return
In the same way, Paul was anticipating his third visit to the people he loved and his very children in the faith. But, they were acting as if he didn’t matter at all and he wouldn’t return. Even though he was dissed, he kept on loving. How did he do it? By following the example of the Lord Jesus Christ, whom he served.

How about me? Am I content and obedient to serve God when the cheers and plaudits are not present? Am I clear on who called me His own and into this life of ministry?

Oh Jesus, how frail I can be. Why do I care so much about other opinions, when all that really matters is You. Help me to again to simply obey day by day. I know that’s where the real joy in life lies. Oh, you’ve made life so wonderful since the day I said yes, I want to follow You. I long for the days when we talk throughout the day from morning to night. You know the one think I want for my birthday.

To Obey Is Better Than Sacrifice

To obey is better than sacrifice
I don’t need your money
I want your life
And I hear you say that I’m coming back soon
But you act like I’ll never return

Well you speak of grace and my love so sweet
How you thrive on milk, but reject My meat
And I can’t help weeping of how it will be
If you keep on ignoring My words
Well you pray to prosper and succeed
But your flesh is something I just can’t feed

To obey is better than sacrifice
I want more than Sunday and Wednesday nights
Cause if you can’t come to Me every day
Then don’t bother coming at all
La, la, la

To obey is better than sacrifice
I want hearts of fire
Not your prayers of ice
And I’m coming quickly
To give back to you
According to what you have done
