Cinch By The Inch v. Silver Bullets And Quick Fixes

Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need.
Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved. Acts 2:43-37

Some of my sports coaches would say “cinch by the inch”. They meant that if I was doing the little exercises and drills faithfully, I would become a better player. Its true with God’s kingdom too. God has his part and we have ours. His part: wonders and signs. Our part: a faithful response to His love that looks like a sense of awe, believing, together, things in common, sacrifice and sharing, meeting needs, daily in worship, moments of communion and meals, gladness, sincerity, praising God and favor with other people. When this is happening, God will entrust to the fellowship those He is in the process of saving! Its really amazing what happens when you love people one at a time… pretty soon they add up. I think we look for short cuts, the shortest express check out line in the store, instant everything… silver bullets and quick fixes, when we should look at Him.

What is part of His kingdom is God building all around me? How am I a co-laborer with Christ?

God as this day begins, I am excited about some new seasons for the dozen young people who are following Jesus’ example and command to be baptized. May their families get a sense of what’s happening in their lives and support them. May we be faithful as a church and school to grow them up into maturity. Bless each one. Now Lord for me, may my response to Your great love be one of faithfulness, inch by inch.
