A String Around My Finger

Remind them to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed, to malign no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing every consideration for all men. For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another.
But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,… Titus 3:1-5

Some people put a string around their finger to remind them of something important to do. Paul reminds Titus of some important attitudes and behaviors that would be important in his leadership. Remembering where he had come from would help him remain humble when interacting with those newer to the faith and still maturing. Of course, all of this was made possible by the love of God expressed in Jesus Christ.

How obedient am I to rulers and authorities? Am I ready for every good deed?

God, as this day begins, may You work in my life as I reach out love other in your name. Thank you for saving me and rescuing me from my foolishness, disobedience, deceit, enslavement to lusts, envy, and hate. Have Your way in me. May Your Spirit regenerate me completely. I know I don’t need a string around my finger, I have You living in my heart, always prompting me to to renewal.
