In the classic movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, a repeating phrase is uttered “Who are Those Guys”. Butch and Sundance are being tracked as outlaws by an unknown but relentless super posse made up of elite lawmen. Eventually, they capture Butch and Sundance who cannot shake them with their usual tricks. In the same way, each of us is being tracked by the “hound of heaven” (poem by Francis Thompson). But, Jesus isn’t just an elite tracker or lawman- He is the Son of the living God. He follows us to redemption, not condemnation. I wonder why some people won’t stop running? The apostle Paul reminded the believers in Colossae just “who” He is.
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. Colossians 1:15-29 NASB
How have I responded to the incredible and unique Son of God who has pursued me and redeemed me and who abides in my heart?
God, as this day begins- I am reminded of sermons that say “its all about Him, Jesus”. And it is. Its not about me, its about Him in me. Help me remember that when I seek after some self vain glory. May I walk with a humble confidence that the Son of God loves me and has chosen to abide with me. May the name of Jesus be exalted in my speech and actions. Amen.
