The Other White Meat

I see a fair amount of people in the world shouting about “My Rights!” There are quite a few Believers clinging to their rights too. That’s ok. But, we should remember that we Christians are part of the body of Christ and “My Rights” isn’t always the paramount priority.

One early issue in the Church was food. I don’t have a lot of rules for myself about what I eat or drink. I didn’t grow up with many either. But, for some- what they eat and drink have great importance. For instance, Jews do not eat pork. When Jews become Christians, they will likely still adhere to their dietary upbringing. They will eventually discover a new freedom to anything with a clean conscience. But, in the meantime they may consider certain foods unholy or even a “meat sacrificed to an idol”. When I eat, I may cause their uniformed mind to stumble. As a mature believer, I can forego my freedom for their sake. This is called the “weaker brother principle”. It has bigger implications because its an expression of love and highlights the importance of unity in the body of Christ.

But take care that this freedom of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak… For through your knowledge the one who is weak is ruined, the brother or sister for whose sake Christ died. And so, by sinning against the brothers and sisters and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. 1 Corinthians 8:9,11-12 NASB

Is any of my conduct causing a brother or sister to stumble? Do I need to have a conversation about it… or simply lay down my freedom for their sake at this time?

God, as this day begins- I think too often I have neglected the unity with other believers in fellowship of the church. I am not insensitive to others, but maybe I should be listening a bit more to understand the backgrounds of other believers. With that in mind and the day ahead- would you lead and guide me today as I minister, love and learn. I have a few projects to really get my arms around and I am asking for Your help.
