Its a real thing and they make money doing it! Yep, there are people who post on social media with “followers” that make large amounts of money swaying others to their point of view. The influencers have entire teams of promoters that gather an online audience for what they are peddling. Everything from the latest scandal, political view, financial advice, sex, cultural shifts, religious slant, Candace, Tucker, Ben, oh you name it. In the first century, the church in Corinth (a metropolitan port city, religiously pagan, relatively rich, and sexually deviant) was advised to cling to Christ, not influencers. Paul said there is One to follow above all others. What a prophetic voice for our time.
My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas”; still another, “I follow Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? 1 Corinthians 1:11-13 NIV
How do I ensure Jesus’ teachings, example and commands are paramount in my life? How discerning am I with that which comes from “influencers”… even the one’s I like?
God, as this day begins- I praise You for voices in the public square and marketplace of ideas who are believers advocating for a Christian worldview. Guard them against ungodly ideas of our age and guide them to be as the Bible says “not many teachers… who will incur a stricter judgment”. Do the same for me! On this day after Christmas, my heart is filled with gratitude for my lovely wife, beautiful family, and friends who are a joy and so much more. May my godly influence begin with them. That is sufficient to change the world.
