I work part-time in the legal field. A professor of mine said “what is the law, but a bunch of rules”. I sighed. He was right at one level, but the intention of the law is far more noble. How terrible it would be if our spiritual life were reduced to keeping rules. Jesus, in His brilliance, said eternal life is relationship- knowing God and the Son whom He sent. When it comes to rules, He summed up all the Law and what the Prophets taught in simple profound explanations. One summary is to ‘love our neighbor as ourselves,… another is the Golden Rule.

In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 7:12 NASB

How proactive am I in the way I reach out and love others? Am I treating others with the overflow of God’s love in my heart or as a protection for my own selfishness (quid pro quo)?

God, as this day begins- Oh what a life You have called me to. Its not easy, but this is life in the kingdom of God. Under the influence of the Holy Spirit I ask “who do You want to love through me today”? Purify me into pure gold as I try to add value to other’s lives. In particular, I pray I might share Your mind with a grieving family today.
