Tax Exempt Pastor

tax exemptNow I, King Artaxerxes, decree that all the treasurers of Trans-Euphrates are to provide with diligence whatever Ezra the priest, the teacher of the Law of the God of heaven, may ask of you— up to a hundred talents of silver, a hundred cors of wheat, a hundred baths of wine, a hundred baths of olive oil, and salt without limit. Whatever the God of heaven has prescribed, let it be done with diligence for the temple of the God of heaven. Why should his wrath fall on the realm of the king and of his sons? You are also to know that you have no authority to impose taxes, tribute or duty on any of the priests, Levites, musicians, gatekeepers, temple servants or other workers at this house of God. Ezra 7:21-24

Now this is a great decree. Artaxerxes sent Ezra with a letter concerning the rebuilding of the temple and other privileges. One was tax exemption for the priests and others serving in the temple. Wow! Nice. Why don’t we hear more sermons on this topic today? Lol. Truth is, as a pastor, I do receive similar privileges in the tax code. The bigger point is that God provided a way for Himself to be worshiped. Same is true today. God makes a way for His people to come to Him and worship. Jesus said, come to me all you who labor and are heavy-laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me for I am humble in spirit, and you will find rest for your soul. What an invitation!

Am I making it easy for people to come to God? Have I created any artificial barriers in what I say or do that hinders people? Am I doing the work of an evangelist?

God, its a brand new day and I get to script it with You! Let’s do something great. Thank you that the burden of taxation rests lighter upon me. Thank you that what You call me to (ministry, etc.) You provide the means necessary.
