I have received constructive criticism many times over in various roles and situations. And for that I am grateful. I have also been unfairly criticized at times. How about you? What should my response be to unwarranted criticism? I think a good way to respond is first self-examination. Accept what is true and reject the rest. Don’t let an undeserved curse come to rest (Solomon’s advice). How? Prayer! Allow God to reveal what is true and He will. He is the perfect judge after all. When the apostle Paul was criticized and ultimately judged by Gallio, the Roman Proconsul, he practiced what he preached and to God’s glory was exonerated! (Acts 18). He ultimately reflected that we “all must stand before the judgment seat of God”. Let’s be ready.
For I am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this acquitted; but the one who examines me is the Lord. Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men’s hearts; and then each man’s praise will come to him from God. 1 Corinthians 4:4-5 NASB
How do I respond to legitimate and unwarranted criticism?
God, as this day begins- I am so grateful for Your grace and the imputed righteousness of Christ. Help me continue to grow in every way. Thank you for the grace-filled people in my life who want to see me become better in every way. Help me be an encourager and to resist the temptations to criticize without constructive help.
