When I was a young, the older kids down the street would make us choose a side… they would demand “You a surfer or a soul brother?” I had no idea what they were saying. After all I was probably eight years old. I think they meant which group do I affiliate. Jesus was asked about his affiliations. He said the primary affiliation He has is with God the Father and all who do His will. This is really tricky because we are born into a family that we know and love. But, in some way the “forever family” of the church is an even more significant affiliation. So, if you had to choose, which would it be… “You a surfer or a soul brother?”
While He was still speaking to the crowds, behold, His mother and brothers were standing outside, seeking to speak to Him. Someone said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak to You.” But Jesus replied to the one who was telling Him and said, “Who is My mother, and who are My brothers?” And extending His hand toward His disciples, He said, “Behold: My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother, and sister, and mother.” Matthew 12:46-50 NASB
How do I balance the love for every family member with the preeminent affiliation I claim as a follower of Jesus Christ?
God, as this day begins- I thank you that there is largely harmony in both affiliations. I do pray that each in my family would come to an even closer and deeper relationship with You and to live their whole life for Your glory. Then, we can all be both a surfer and a soul brother.
