Planes that land safely don’t make the news! I heard that recently. And it makes sense. You will likely never hear about the countless blessings, expressions of love, faithful service, Bible studies held, people edified, hearts healed that happen everywhere in the world because God is at work in His people and in the church. But,… and its a big but! Immorality happens too. Why? We are a collection of immature and imperfect people, mostly striving to be like Jesus in word, thought and deed. But, we fail. In the immature Corinth church, the apostle Paul had to bring discipline to one such situation. I think you’ll find it shocking and interesting. Let’s not let the scandals stop us from serving our heavenly Father.
It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of such a kind as does not exist even among the Gentiles, that someone has his father’s wife. You have become arrogant and have not mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be removed from your midst… Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. 1 Corinthians 5:1-2; 6-7
How am I exemplifying simple, humble service to the God I know and love? Am I tempted to look for scandals more than faithfulness?
God, as this day begins- Oh what lies ahead! So many opportunities to reach out and love others in Your name. Help me do that. As our older adults gather today (Encore Fellowship), may there be joy, reflection, and anticipation for this new year. For those I know who are sick and suffering, oh would You meet them and bring healing and comfort, especially my friend John House.
