Why Pray? An Effective Life.

effective teamIs anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. James 5:14-16

There is funny line from a recent Tom Cruise movie Oblivion. A computer-like voice continually asks a woman about her husband and partner: “Are you still an effective team?” Life is full of situations, seasons and emotions. I pray so that I can find God’s wisdom, guidance and fellowship. When I am happy, my heart is filled with songs (prayers set to music). When I am sick and weak, I invite others to pray for me and I am healed. When I sin, I confess my sins and healing and restoration. This is not a wussy, weak way to live. It leads to a powerful and effective life.

God, this is the day You have made. I will rejoice and be glad in it. As I start my day with coffee in hand and scripture before me, fill me up with the wisdom from above, guidance for the conversations I will have today, and forgiveness where I have failed you. Be close to me. Speak to me and know my answer is yes. I want to live an effective life! Are we still an effective team?
