The Danger of Hypocrisy

“Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses; therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them.” Matthew 23:1-3

They tell others to demonstrate an all out commitment to God, but don’t do it themselves. Their motivation is to be seen by others. They are caught up in having their position recognized. They are in to their titles. And even want to be thought of as a teacher or Rabbi. In the end the kingdgom of God is “shut off” to people and they themselves will not enter it or experience what God intended in this love relationship. And so Jesus pronounces the sternest of warnings and says “Woe to you”. No wonder Jesus told his close friends, “a little leaven (sin of hypocrisy and pride) leavens the whole lump”. What I do, affects many others.

How about me. Am I entrapped in hypocrisy and misplaced motivations? To a small degree I see it creep into my heart. Am I opening the doors of the kingdom by inspriing and equipping people to know God and live each day in communion with Him? I hope so.

Dear Lord, you have given me great responsibility. Help me not to misuse the giftedness and the authority and the privilege to share the gospel. I want to help people become “twice the sons of heaven” as myself. Empower and lead me by Your Spirit today.
