Three WishesNow when David arose in the morning, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying, “Go and tell David, ‘Thus says the Lord: “I offer you three things; choose one of them for yourself, that I may do it to you.”’”

So Gad came to David and told him; and he said to him, “Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land? Or shall you flee three months before your enemies, while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ plague in your land? Now consider and see what answer I should take back to Him who sent me.” 2 Samuel 24:11

Everyone has heard jokes about the man who rubs a bottle and a Genie pops out and offers three wishes. David acted without faith and numbered God’s armies. Gad tells him to choose one of three punishments. Which would you have taken? Sometimes choices have bad consequences. In His love for David and sovereignty, God gives David the responsibility to choose his discipline. What a difficult decision for any leader.

How about me? How do I bear up under the consequences created by my decisions? Do I prefer to place myself in the hands of God or man?

Lord, David chose wisely. I too want to fall upon Your mercies. You are gracious and filled with lovingkindness. I am excited about today. Would you go before me bringing success and victory. Also Lord, would you silence those who hurl insults and publicly defame You and the church? Forgive them Father, for they don’t know what they are doing. Remind us all realize we are going to spend eternity together in Your presence.
