I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, which said: “Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea. Revelation 1:9:11
The apostle John outlived the others. While they were martyred, he was exiled to the lonely Island of Patmos. He could look across the sea to where the seven churches were. How often he must have prayed for the people there. Then God gave John a vision of hope and eternal purpose to share with them… Jesus coming back! I love that John recognized his relationship to other believers. He was a brother (all in God’s family), he was to suffer (for the sake of the gospel), and he was to endure till the end.
How many of us understand our great calling? If we are alive, we are alive with an eternal purpose.
God, today is what many call ‘The Lord’s Day’, the day that You, Jesus resurrected. Its the first day of the week. For us its a gathering day. I pray that my worship will be pleasing to You and that I might inspire, minister, heal, or otherwise encourage others today. As I often start my day… “Good morning God, this is Your day, I am Your child, please show me the way”.
