Which Blade Does the Cutting?

So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. Philippians 2:12-13

People often discuss whether it was our actions that save us, or completely God’s? Here Paul describes the wonderful tension in our reality. He says that we should ‘work out our own salvation- with fear and trembling’. That sounds like its ‘on us’! Then, he blows our minds by adding ‘for it is God who is at work in you’… Wow! If God is in me, bringing about His will and good pleasure, how could I ever fail? That seems like its all on Him. I think its like asking the question, “Which blade of the scissor does the cutting?”

Am I allowing the Spirit of God in me to bring about His will in my life and His good pleasure? Is there anything displeasing, quenching or grieving God, the Spirit from saving me?

God, I know You saved me, are saving me, and I fully expect to be saved. Thank you. I feel like its all You. Then, there are moments when I do something that is actually good and pure and noble… and I feel like I am working out my salvation. Oh, but its You in me- and always will be. To You be the glory in me and in the church!
