Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but those who keep the law strive with them.
Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand all things.
Better is the poor who walks in his integrity than he who is crooked though he be rich.
He who keeps the law is a discerning son, but he who is a companion of gluttons humiliates his father.
He who increases his wealth by interest and usury gathers it for him who is gracious to the poor.
He who turns away his ear from listening to the law, even his prayer is an abomination. Proverbs 28:4-9

The law of God (and hopefully of man) is designed to bring about justice. It addresses wrongs and provides remedies. So “we know the law is good if one uses is lawfully” (1 Timothy 1:8) It seems today, that people are quick to throw out the law for convenience and situational ethics or their own preferences. In today’s reading of the Proverbs I am reminded of the importance of enforcing laws, because lacking diligence in this area encourages lawbreaking (it indirectly praises the wicked). That’s one of my problems with the “line cutters” who cross our borders or overstay visas. If we allow it to continue, it will praise the wicked. (Do I think the people are inherently wicked? Not necessarily, rather they are lawbreakers who have cut in line ahead of others and ignored the proper method provided to them and others). For those who claim “necessity” (often called asylum) I would prefer they make their case in the U.S. Embassy in their existing country. Its better to do that and have integrity than to come for riches here (often called ‘a better life’). Well, enough on illegal immigration topic, there is plenty of lawbreaking beyond that going on. That one just came to mind.

I am really striving to understand the application of what Solomon said about those who make wealth by charging interest and usury… ‘they gather it for (ostensibly someone else) who will be gracious to the poor’. Is he saying the government or another may take a large percentage of income earned by say… credit card companies, mortgage lenders, and financial investors to fund welfare programs? Hmmm, I want to ponder this awhile. There certainly is a difference between the person who risks his money on building a business or who develops a new idea/product than one who lends money for usury. So, I could see two different capital gains/income tax structures.

Lord, I want to be one who ‘understands all things’, so I will seek You, Your ways, and wisdom. This morning I am praying for the Hennessy family and also anticipating the wedding ceremony for Jeff and Cindy. May I be a blessing to both.
