We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.
Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 1 Timothy 1:8-11; 15
I heard a sports commentator say “sports doesn’t necessarily develop character, but it sure will reveal it!” The law does similar work. Misunderstanding the purpose of God’s holy law will lead to false doctrine and meaningless talk. We already see that happening in America with regard to man’s laws. The apostle Paul left his number one disciple Timothy in the church at Ephesus to combat those who wanted to spend time on meaningless genealogies and teach false doctrine. They had no training or understanding of the law or its purpose. So, Paul clarifies that the law of God reveals the sinfulness of man… it doesn’t fix it. The gospel does that! And he, like so many of us, found forgiveness of our sins and recognize just how sinful we were when God saved us.
Do I understand God’s law? Do I revere it, fear it, see its glory?
God, I thank you that Jesus is the fulfillment of the law and has come into my life to lead me by the indwelling Spirit. As this day unfolds, please use me energy and efforts to love others in Your name. There is so much ahead with funerals to plan, chaplains to inspire, prayers to pray, and sermons to prepare. I need You to direct my efforts moment by moment. Now, let’s go take on the day!
