Letting God Love You

Now the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, and He opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.
Leah conceived and bore a son and named him Reuben, for she said, “Because the Lord has seen my affliction; surely now my husband will love me.”
Then she conceived again and bore a son and said, “Because the Lord has heard that I am unloved, He has therefore given me this son also.” So she named him Simeon.
She conceived again and bore a son and said, “Now this time my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore he was named Levi.
And she conceived again and bore a son and said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” Therefore she named him Judah. Then she stopped bearing. Genesis 29:31-35

Leah knew that Jacob loved Rachel more than her. I am sure it hurt deeply. Hoping to find his love by bearing children, the names of her sons reflect her journey in letting God love her.

Simeon – she asked God to take notice of her
Levi – surely my husband will take notice of me (but he didn’t)
Judah – I will praise the Lord (she realized that no matter what, she had the love and affection of God)

When we open our heart and receive the love of God, it satisfies our deepest needs and longing. While we may always desire the love of others, we can live and love and laugh and not be trapped in trying to earn their affection. That’s a freeing way to live.

How content am I with the love of God? Do I realize how fortunate I am to have a wife, children, parents and friends who also share their love and affection?

Lord as this day begins, I am grateful for the deep down satisfaction of knowing that I am loved. I wish the same for all I know. You have been gracious to me. I want to ask for favor with my mom’s health and energy. May this day present opportunities to reach out and inspire and care for others. Please lead and guide moment by moment.
