It’s Time To Speak The Truth In Love

Help, Lord, for the godly man ceases to be,
For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.
They speak falsehood to one another;
With flattering lips and with a double heart they speak.
May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,
The tongue that speaks great things;
Who have said, “With our tongue we will prevail;
Our lips are our own; who is lord over us?”
“Because of the devastation of the afflicted, because of the groaning of the needy,
Now I will arise,” says the Lord; “I will set him in the safety for which he longs.”

The words of the Lord are pure words;
As silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times.
You, O Lord, will keep them;
You will preserve him from this generation forever.
The wicked strut about on every side
When vileness is exalted among the sons of men. Psalm 12 NASB

There was a day when people guarded their words and cared about what they said. That day seems to be largely gone, just like in David’s day. Today, people are careless with their words publicly, online, and in person. Uttering falsehoods and lodging scathing rebukes of strangers are commonplace- from the kitchen to the halls of Congress. Its sad, because as David writes- who is left to care for the afflicted and needy? So, God says “He will step in and place those in need into a place of safety”. Oh how we need pastors and Christians to speak the truth in a loving way and model godly discourse, especially with those with whom we disagree.

God, how does my language and communication reflect that I have turned ownership of my tongue over to You?

God, I know that godly communication is for the edification of the hearers. Please use what I think, say, and write for Your purposes, especially to uplift those in the body of Christ. Please enter the public discourse Lord through those who would be willing to speak on Your behalf. Guard their hearts so that they might demonstrate a new spirit that benefits the needy.
