It’s Really Quite Simple

Now as to the love of the brethren, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; for indeed you do practice it toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, to excel still more, and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you, so that you will behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need. 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12

What if everyone was really good at ‘love’? What a world it would be! The believers in Thessaloniki got it right. They were spirit led people, taught by God to love one another. They extended their love and affection to people in nearby towns as well (all Macedonia). Some might wonder, is that enough? Were they fulfilling God’s call on their lives? It seems too simple, too easy. While they could still excel more, it was enough. Indeed, that along with self-sufficient quiet living was just what the apostle Paul prescribed.

How about me? Would others say I love well? I am too caught up in ‘lofty’ things and ignoring the blessing and testimony of a simple self-sufficient life that has love on display for all to see?

God, as this day begins,… may I clearly see the opportunities to reach out and love people in Your name, in my own home town and nearby ones as well. Remind me of the value of a quiet life dedicated to loving You, family, friends and strangers.
