Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3:12-14
Have you ever seen a woman go through her entire closet trying to figure out what to wear? Its funny to watch, because there can be literally hundreds of choices, but she will feel like “I have nothing to wear”. That usually means a shopping trip is on the horizon. The Bible says that we are to ‘put on’ and ‘clothe ourselves’ with character qualities that are consistent with Christ and come from the Spirit of God. As a result, we are able to bear with others who offend us, forgive one another and as the perfect ‘accessory’ to all of these we put on love!
What am I wearing? Have I taken off the old self with its sinful desires? Have I replaced the old self with the new one being created in Christ? I look back on my life and see how God has really changed me. So much of my earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry is dead. But, not all.
God, walking closely in this life with You, clarifies my great purpose each day. As I look at my “closet” of what to wear… please reveal if I have anything that should be thrown away or sold at a garage sale. What do I need to ‘put on’ next, to look more and more like Jesus?
