A Garment Of Good Works

Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing,  modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.  1 Timothy 1:9-10

I must confess that fashion is not my strong suit. If I ever look cool or “with the times”, its because my kids or wife bought me my clothes. The apostle Paul reminds us that giving attention to good works and godliness is more important than dressing up with expensive accessories. Of course, there is nothing wrong with looking good and being appropriately dressed for every occasion. But, isn’t it true, what really matters is a persons inner qualities, character and personality- which are usually evidenced by their good works, or lack thereof. As I look for a mate for my middle son, that’s what I am looking for.

How about me? Am I focused on externalities more than my own inner life of prayer, devotion and service? What good works would others see that show my life is committed to following Jesus?

God, as this day begins… I know You have prepared good works and all I have to do is ‘walk in them’. Lift the scales on my eyes so I might see them and You. Prepare my heart with compassion from Yours. And, I pray my son will find a young woman whose life is filled with good works.
