A Bit of Fire & Brimstone

But, beloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you, and things that accompany salvation, though we are speaking in this way. For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints. And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Hebrews 6:9-12

Have you ever received a bit of a harsh scolding, only to be nurtured back? That’s what happened to the readers of the epistle to the Hebrews. The author sternly warns them about the dangers of ‘falling away’ (sort of a fire and brimstone message). Then, the author builds them up with the encouragement- “we are convinced of better things concerning you”. Its as if his hypothetical proposition wasn’t about believers at all. Who knows? Its good to live in the tension and simply follow the advice. Be diligent, not sluggish. Be imitators of others who exercised their faith an inherited God’s promises. That’s the place to be. No fire and brimstone ahead, only eternity in God’s presence.

Is my life a reflection of diligence? Am I, through faith and patience inheriting the promises of God?

God, as this day begins- I look forward to being used by You to bless someone. Are there any of your saints who need attention? Move me to just the right places to express Your great love. Thank you for Your promises. You alone are faithful.
