A Better Country

All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own. And indeed if they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them. Hebrews 11:13-16

I love my country. I would fight for her and die for her. But, I am seeking a better one. Those with faith in God are always looking to that better country which is heaven. We have a slice of it here and now because the Spirit of God abides in our hearts… but that’s just the lemon next to the pie. The real pie in the sky… so to speak, is experienced when we leave this world and enter the next. In that place it will be literally beyond imagination with perfect relationships, with a new body that never wears out, in an environment that is truly paradise (1 Cor. 2:9), where we live out our profound and eternal purpose (quarterbacks will still throw footballs – C.S. Lewis), and most of all we will know Him (God) even as we are known- completely and intimately. But, now, we wait for the redemption to come. Let’s not become too attached to earthly things or worldly pleasures. There is a far better country to come!

How tightly am I clinging to things of this world? Do they capture an inordinate amount of my time and affection? How am I preparing for the better country?

God, as this day begins- I am so grateful that I have dual citizenship. I love America! I long for the next country – heaven. I can only imagine what it will be like. And every time I imagine how wonderful it is… You say “it’s better!” For that I am grateful. Help me make the most of my time here and now in preparation for then and there.
