Idols Can Never Satisfy

idols can never satisfyHas a nation changed its gods, which are not gods?
But My people have changed their Glory for what does not profit.
Be astonished, O heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid;
Be very desolate,” says the Lord.

For My people have committed two evils:
They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water. Jeremiah 1:11-13

The people of God forsook Him even after He had led them through the wilderness to a promised land. He was a fountain of living water to them, even as Jesus is to us. “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.” John 7:38 The second sin was to replace Him with attempts to fill their lives and hearts with idols – literally broken cisterns that can hold no water. Idols can never satisfy. Oh this is a message for me and every Christian (arguably for our entire nation).

Have I tried to replace the God of the universe and His role in my life with anything or anyone else? How is my satisfaction? That’s an indication of the role idols play in my life.

God, I know You have brought me through every difficulty in life. You have led me to a land flowing with milk and honey… peace with You, purpose in the world, love and affection from family and friends. Oh, I want to find my satisfaction from You and that which comes from Your hand. I know idols can never satisfy. Help me be aware of any that garner my attention or affection.
