Good People Don’t Go To Heaven

For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying,
“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord:
I will put My laws upon their heart, and on their mind I will write them,”
He then says, “And their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin. Hebrews 10:15-18

My friend and pastor used to say “Good people don’t go to heaven. Forgiven people do”. What a profound truth. God sent Jesus into the world to pay the penalty for my sins. The one time offering of His own body was sufficient. My sins are remembered no more. I am forgiven and no longer is an offering required. When Jesus was dying upon the cross, he uttered final words “It is finished!”. The Greek word tetelestoi- could very well be translated “It is paid in full”. It an accounting term. And my debt has been paid in full. While I would like to be good and strive to do good, my salvation is not dependent upon my goodness. Rather, it is dependent upon His forgiveness. And that is quite a freedom that I find, in Christ. I wish more found it too.

How will God’s Spirit lead me today? What good lie ahead?

Lord Jesus I thank you for imparting to me Your goodness. Would you, by the Spirit of God in my heart, speak to me, prompt me, and lead me in righteousness. Oh the freedom and joy that is mine being forgiven by You, my high priest. Would you work within the lives of the following people. Help Rachel and Johnny with the delivery of a blessed healthy baby, without undue birth pain. Please be close to Debbie and her mom Molly as we remember her dad at the funeral today. Continue to inspire my daughter toward her goals, be her encouragement. And restore the marriage of my precious neighbor and his wife. Use me as You see fit in all these and other circumstances. Please continue to provide the money I need to live this amazing life in a generous fashion, even as You are. I know we will enjoy forever in that heavenly abode, but what purpose I sense here and now. I am so glad to be forgiven!
