Following Jesus’ Teachings Can Be Scary

I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Luke 12:4-7

While thousands looked on, Jesus culled his disciples together and warned them about the fickle crowds that are so easily swayed even to the point of betraying what they once loved. He reminded them and us that God alone is to be feared, not man. I remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words “I’m not fearin’ any man, for mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord”. In his righteous cause, he would face death, but without fear of man, only the God who called him to preach and rectify the injustices of his day. He knew from scripture that he was loved and his life mattered to God (and had inherent value).

Yes, following Jesus’ teachings can be scary, but it will always be worth it.

Is fear of what others think or say, holding me back from a God-honoring calling?

Lord Jesus, just to say those words reminds me that I have decided you are my maximum authority. What You have called me to, I will pursue with zeal, patience and endurance. I am reminded today that I am loved and You know all about me. I am worth more than many sparrows.
